Leave a WhatsApp Group via API: A Safe Exit Workflow
To make a connected WhatsApp account leave a group through UnifyPort, send POST /v1/accounts/{account_id}/groups/leave with group_id in the JSON body. This changes the selected account’s group membership; it is not a command to delete everyone’s group or erase your support database. Confirm the target and stop your application’s queued replies for that group before requesting the exit.
Key takeaways
- Select the messaging account and group together. A group name is not a unique target.
- Leaving, removing another member, muting notifications, and cleaning up stored messages are separate operations.
- The current UnifyPort leave action supports
whatsapp, not every provider that can list groups. - A timeout leaves the outcome uncertain. Observe current state before deciding whether another request is appropriate.
Decide whether leaving is the intended action
WhatsApp’s official exit and deletion guide distinguishes Exit group, which keeps chat history, from Exit and delete for me, which removes it locally. Do not combine those intentions behind a generic “Remove” button. For a group associated with a community, check the member exit guide before proceeding; community effects need their own review.
| Operator’s goal | Appropriate workflow |
|---|---|
| Have the connected account stop participating | Explicit group exit |
| Reduce notification noise | Mute notifications |
| Stop automatic replies but retain membership | An application-owned pause |
| Change another participant’s admin role | A separate role-change operation |
| Delete stored support content | Your retention and deletion workflow |
For the notification decision, see mute vs block in a shared inbox. If the group still needs an administrator, handle that responsibility separately using the admin promotion and demotion guide, then review whether exiting is still appropriate. Neither handoff nor cleanup is part of the leave request.
Capture the account and group before confirming
Use List groups for the selected account. It lists joined groups, including silent groups, and returns id, conversation_id, and name; for groups, conversation_id equals id. Follow has_more and next_cursor rather than choosing from only the first page.
Preserve the returned ID exactly. Display both the account identity and group name in the confirmation dialog, retaining their IDs server-side. Similar names across accounts must not share a single action target.
Recommended application controls:
- Require an authorized operator to confirm this specific exit.
- Pause new automated sends for this account/group pair and inspect jobs already queued or in flight.
- Keep the signed webhook receiver running. Pausing outgoing work does not require disabling inbound storage.
- Record the operator, target, and reason in your own audit store—not as invented API fields.
These are application safeguards, not additional guarantees provided by the endpoint.
Submit one leave request
UnifyPort provides an unofficial interface. Its Leave group reference documents the request below and a successful 200 OK response containing data.ok: true. The provider action matrix maps this action only to whatsapp, excluding LINE, Telegram, and the separate whatsapp-protocol provider.
Illustrative server-side JavaScript follows. Populate the environment variables from the confirmed selection and your secret store. The example makes one request, with no automatic retry:
const accountId = process.env.UNIFYPORT_ACCOUNT_ID;
const groupId = process.env.WHATSAPP_GROUP_ID;
const apiKey = process.env.UNIFYPORT_API_KEY;
if (!accountId || !groupId || !apiKey) {
throw new Error('Missing confirmed target or credential');
}
const response = await fetch(
`https://api.unifyport.ai/v1/accounts/${encodeURIComponent(accountId)}/groups/leave`,
{
method: 'POST',
headers: {
'X-Api-Key': apiKey,
'Content-Type': 'application/json'
},
body: JSON.stringify({ group_id: groupId })
}
);
const outcome = await response.json();
if (!response.ok || outcome.data?.ok !== true) {
throw new Error('Exit not confirmed; review the response');
}
A production caller should retain the HTTP status and request_id securely, handle network and parsing failures, and enforce operator permissions before this code runs. A missing response is not evidence that WhatsApp rejected the action.
Reconcile without turning exit into deletion
After success, refresh the account’s joined-group view. After a timeout, keep the action unresolved and check current membership, using the native app if the API read is inconclusive. A failed read or an incomplete page is not proof of departure. Do not automatically rejoin or resend as compensation.
Keep pending reply jobs paused until an operator resolves the situation. Delayed incoming events must not silently re-enable sending. Leaving also does not erase messages your application previously stored; apply your retention policy separately.
If you use group events as reconciliation hints, follow the webhook delivery contract for signature verification and duplicate handling. Do not require an invented group.left event or promise a callback for every leave request.
FAQ
Does this delete the group for everyone?
No. The documented action makes the connected account leave. It is not a group-dissolution or database-deletion API.
Can I use member removal to leave?
Use the dedicated leave action for the connected account. Managing another member is a different request with different inputs.
Does listing LINE groups mean I can leave them through this API?
No. Read and write support differ. Check the action matrix, not only whether a group appears in a list.
Next step and sources
Implement against the Leave group reference. Before enabling the control, test wrong-account selection, paginated lists, double clicks, queued replies, and an uncertain network result with accounts you control. These are suggested checks, not reported test results.
